2. Sermon Flow & Takeaways
I. Christ Suffered Once to Bring Us to God: 1 Peter 3:18
Peter grounds the Christian’s willingness to suffer for doing good in the suffering of Christ. Yet Christ is far more than our example: He is our substitute, the righteous One suffering once for the unrighteous in order to reconcile us to God.
- Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice means believers do not need to interpret every hardship as God punishing them for sins Christ has already borne.
- The ultimate gift of the gospel is not merely escape from judgment, but God Himself: Christ died “that he might bring us to God.”
II. Christ Brings His People Safely Through Judgment: 1 Peter 3:19-21
Peter points to Christ’s triumph and then to Noah, where a tiny minority trusted God and was carried safely through the very judgment that destroyed the unbelieving world. Baptism corresponds to this pattern by publicly identifying the believer with the death and resurrection of Christ.
- Being outnumbered does not mean being wrong, and cultural dominance does not determine God’s verdict.
- Baptism does not save through the physical action of water. It is the God-appointed appeal of faith that points beyond itself to the saving power of the risen Christ.
- God’s patience should never be confused with God’s approval. Judgment may be delayed, but His warnings remain true.
III. Christ Reigns Over Every Power: 1 Peter 3:22
The passage begins with Christ apparently beneath the powers of this world and ends with every power beneath Christ. The crucified Savior is risen, ascended, enthroned, and sovereign over angels, authorities, powers, death, and every threat faced by His people.
- Do not read God’s final verdict from your present circumstances. Suffering is real, but suffering does not get the last word.
- Because Christ reigns, Christians can obey faithfully at work, at home, in witness, and in suffering without making approval, comfort, control, or security their functional saviors.
- The Christ who suffered to bring us to God now reigns over everything that threatens us.
