2. Sermon Flow & Takeaways
I. Keep Doing Good: 1 Peter 3:13-14
Peter continues the thought of Psalm 34: God sees His people, hears their prayers, and stands against evil. Christians should therefore be zealous for good without developing a persecution complex, while recognizing that faithfulness can still bring real suffering.
• Doing what is right does not guarantee an easy life, but suffering does not mean obedience was a mistake.
• The world can make obedience costly, but it cannot turn obedience into foolishness.
• Ask: What is the next good thing Christ has called me to do? Then do it.
II. Fear Christ, Not Man: 1 Peter 3:14-15
Peter answers fear not by telling Christians to become more self-confident, but by telling them to honor Christ as Lord in their hearts. Drawing from Isaiah 8, Peter gives Jesus the place that belongs to the LORD Himself.
• Fear becomes spiritually dangerous when another person’s approval or threats begin determining whether we will obey Christ.
• The person whose approval you cannot live without will eventually tell you how to live.
• Christian courage is not a personality type. Peter himself once feared a servant girl, yet the risen Christ restored him to courageous faithfulness.
III. Speak Your Hope: 1 Peter 3:15
Christians are to be ready to give a reasoned explanation for the hope within them. In context, Peter imagines a Christian life so visibly hopeful under pressure that unbelievers begin asking why.
• The “living hope” introduced in 1 Peter 1 becomes a visible hope in 1 Peter 3.
• Every Christian should increasingly be able to explain simply why he or she has hope in Christ.
• Our witness must be courageous but gentle: we can be clear without being cruel and defend the truth without becoming defensive.
IV. Keep a Clear Conscience: 1 Peter 3:16-17
Christians cannot control every accusation made against them, but they can seek to ensure that those accusations are false. Peter distinguishes suffering caused by righteousness from suffering caused by our own sinful or foolish behaviour.
• You cannot always control your reputation, but you can guard your conscience.
• If the world is offended, let it be offended by Christ, not by our sin.
• Even unjust suffering remains under God’s providence. The person threatening us, the institution pressuring us, and the crowd opposing us are not sovereign. Christ is Lord.
The Gospel Foundation: 1 Peter 3:18
Peter immediately grounds Christian suffering in Christ: “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.” Christ is not merely our example in suffering; He is our substitute and Savior.
• Jesus perfectly obeyed where we have feared, compromised, remained silent, or sought human approval.
• Peter is living proof that Christ restores cowards and makes them faithful.
• Christian courage grows not from saying, “I must be stronger,” but from knowing that Christ died for us, rose for us, reigns over us, and has secured our future.
Main Takeaway:
When faithfulness costs you, fear Christ, not man, and keep doing good.
