I. Submit to Human Authority for the Lord’s Sake

1 Peter 2:13-14

Peter moves from the church’s identity as God’s chosen people to the public conduct that should flow from that identity. Christians submit to established civil authorities, not because rulers are ultimate or always righteous, but because Jesus is Lord.

• Ordinary obedience can become an act of worship when it is done “for the Lord’s sake.”
• When authorities command what God forbids or forbid what God commands, believers must obey God, while resisting truthfully, respectfully, and without vengeance.

II. Silence Foolish Accusations by Doing Good

1 Peter 2:15

Christians were falsely accused of being dangerous and disloyal. Peter tells them to answer slander through sustained, visible goodness that makes false accusations increasingly difficult to believe.

• Some criticisms are answered not by one argument, but by years of honest, generous, and courageous living.
• When criticism is false, respond with truth and goodness. When criticism is true, repent rather than hiding behind claims of persecution.

III. Live as Free Servants of God

1 Peter 2:16

Christian freedom is not freedom from every authority. It is freedom from sin’s mastery so that we may gladly belong to and serve God.

• Do not use Christian liberty, conscience, or courage as a covering for pride, contempt, selfishness, or rebellion.
• Christ has purchased our freedom through His blood, and the Holy Spirit enables us to submit without servility, disagree without hatred, and suffer without retaliation.

IV. Keep Every Loyalty in Its Proper Place

1 Peter 2:17

Peter summarizes the Christian’s public life with four commands: honour everyone, love the brotherhood, fear God, and honour the emperor.

• Every person bears God’s image and must be treated with dignity, even when their actions or beliefs must be opposed.
• Political loyalties must never become stronger than our love for Christ’s church.
• Rulers receive genuine honour, but God alone receives ultimate fear, worship, and allegiance.

V. The True King Makes Rebels Free

Jesus submitted to unjust rulers without compromising truth or returning evil for evil. More than our example, He bore our rebellion in His body on the cross, rose as the true King, and now turns rebels into willing servants of God.

• Bring both rebellious contempt and cowardly compromise to Christ.
• Repent, believe in the crucified and risen King, and live as a free servant of God before a watching world.
