  • Exodus 24:3-8

2. Sermon Flow & Takeaways

I. Christ Speaks Through His Apostle

Peter introduces himself as “an apostle of Jesus Christ,” meaning this letter comes with Christ’s own authority through his appointed witness. The restored Peter, who once denied Christ, now strengthens suffering Christians by the grace of Christ.

Takeaways:

  • We do not need vague inspiration; we need the living Christ to speak with authority.
  • When 1 Peter comforts, corrects, and commands us, Christ is shepherding his people.

II. God Names His People Elect Exiles

Peter calls his readers “elect exiles,” holding together their heavenly belonging and earthly displacement. Before the world calls them strange, heaven calls them chosen.

Takeaways:

  • Suffering, loneliness, failure, and cultural hostility may try to rename us, but God names his people first.
  • Christians are resident aliens: faithful in earthly responsibilities, but finally citizens of heaven.

III. The Father Has Set His Love Upon You

Peter says believers are elect “according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.” This foreknowledge is not bare foresight, but God’s covenantal, foreloving purpose.

Takeaways:

  • Your election is not disproved by your exile; scattered does not mean abandoned.
  • The gospel frees us from both religious pride and secular self-creation because our identity is received from God, not achieved by performance or invented by desire.

IV. The Spirit Has Consecrated You for Obedience

Peter says believers are chosen “in the sanctification of the Spirit.” The Spirit sets God’s people apart, brings them to Christ, awakens faith, and forms them for obedience to Jesus.

Takeaways:

  • Election is not meant to produce speculation or laziness, but holiness under pressure.
  • Gospel obedience does not purchase grace; it flows from grace, because Christ has already obeyed where we failed.

V. The Son Has Cleansed You by His Blood

Peter says believers are chosen “for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood.” This echoes Exodus 24, where covenant blood marked God’s people; now Christians are cleansed by the better blood of Christ.

Takeaways:

  • Our deepest problem is not merely that we feel out of place, but that we are guilty before a holy God.
  • The blood of Jesus cleanses the conscience, seals the covenant, brings us near, and gives weary exiles hope.

VI. Grace and Peace for the Exile Road

Peter closes the greeting with, “May grace and peace be multiplied to you.” Christians already know grace and peace, but they need them multiplied for suffering, holiness, witness, repentance, and endurance.

Takeaways:

  • Peace is not the absence of pressure; it is peace with God through Jesus Christ.
  • The commands of 1 Peter will crush us if detached from the opening truth: the triune God has claimed us.
