2. Sermon Flow & Takeaways

I. The Genealogy of the King (1:1-17)
Matthew begins with a genealogy that anchors Jesus in Abraham and David, revealing both promise and brokenness. The inclusion of outsiders and scandal highlights God’s faithfulness through messy history.

  • God works through broken people and stories.

  • Our identity is secure in Christ, not our family name or performance.

II. The Dilemma of the Righteous Man (1:18-21)
Joseph faces a painful choice between justice and mercy when Mary is found with child. God reframes the scandal through divine revelation.

  • Faith often requires trusting God when appearances seem impossible.

  • True righteousness is both just and merciful.

III. The Prophecy Fulfilled (1:22-23)
Matthew declares that Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled: a virgin conceives and bears Immanuel, God with us.

  • God’s promises never fail, even across centuries.

  • Our deepest longing for presence and intimacy is met in Christ.

IV. The Obedience of Faith (1:24-25)
Joseph obeys without delay, embracing shame to align with God’s word, and names the child Jesus.

  • Obedience may cost reputation and comfort, yet God sustains His people.

  • Hidden faithfulness matters deeply in God’s kingdom.

Conclusion
The genealogy’s brokenness, Joseph’s dilemma, the prophecy’s wonder, and Joseph’s obedience all point to the climactic truth: Jesus has come to save His people from their sins.

  • The King has come, He is with us, and He will come again.
