Weekly Devotional: The Signs of Jesus—A Call to See and Believe
February 27, 2025Devotional: The Signs of Jesus—A Call to See and Believe
"Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name."- John 20:30-31
Have you ever seen a sign that changed the way you saw things? Maybe it was a road sign that warned you of danger ahead, a banner celebrating an event, or an icon that unlocked a feature on your favourite RPG. Signs are meant to reveal something, to direct our attention beyond themselves to a deeper reality.
The Gospel of John is filled with signs—seven miraculous works of Jesus that serve as windows into His identity and invitations to deeper faith. John tells us that these signs were written so that we might believe in Jesus and receive life in His name.
This Sunday, we begin a new series: The Signs of Jesus: Seeing and Believing. Over the coming weeks, we will walk through these miraculous moments and discover how they reveal who Jesus is, what He came to do, and how He transforms those who trust in Him.
The first sign we will look at is found in John 2:1-11, where Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding in Cana. At first glance, it may seem like a small act of kindness to save a wedding celebration. But this miracle is so much more. It is a sign of transformation, a picture of how Jesus takes what is empty, inadequate, and insufficient and fills it with something new, something better.
As we prepare for this series, ask yourself:
- Am I truly seeing Jesus for who He is, or have I settled for a shallow understanding?
- Am I willing to be transformed by Him, or am I still clinging to my own efforts?
- Do I approach the Word of God with expectation, believing that these signs are written for my faith and my life?
Jesus’ signs were not just for those who witnessed them firsthand, they are for us today. Through them, He is calling us to see, to believe, and to be changed.
This series will also be a great opportunity to invite friends, family, and neighbors who may not yet know Christ. As we approach Easter, people are often more open to conversations about faith. The signs of Jesus are powerful testimonies of who He is and what He has done, and they point directly to the cross and resurrection. Who in your life needs to see Jesus clearly? Be praying for them, and consider inviting them to church in the coming weeks.
