The Joy of Worship: 12 Ways to Come to Church

“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the LORD!’” - Psalm 122:1

The weekly gathering of the saints is one of the great joys of the Christian life. It is where the Word is preached, prayers are offered, praises are sung, burdens are shared, and lives are shaped. But how we come to worship matters. Here are twelve biblical encouragements for how we can come to church in a way that honors Christ and builds up His body.

  1. Come

“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the LORD!’” - Psalm 122:1

Worship is a privilege. Let our hearts echo David’s gladness as we come to meet with the living God and with His people.

  1. Come Early

“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God … let your words be few” - Ecclesiastes 5:1-2

Arriving early gives us space to settle our hearts, prepare our minds, and approach worship with reverence rather than haste.

  1. Come With Your Whole Family

“Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, so that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God” - Deuteronomy 31:12

God’s call to worship includes young and old alike. When families worship together, children grow up knowing they belong in the church.

  1. Take a Place Toward the Front

“When you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place … then you will be honored” - Luke 14:10

Sitting toward the front can help us listen attentively and frees up space at the back for guests or young families who may need easier access.

  1. Be Devout

“The LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him” - Habakkuk 2:20

Worship is a sacred moment. It is not about performance or personality, but about the presence of God. Come with awe and reverence.

  1. Help Strangers to Find and Follow the Service

“Show hospitality to one another without grumbling” - 1 Peter 4:9

Take the initiative to welcome others. Help them find a seat, a Bible, or the right page in the hymnal. A small act of kindness can ease a nervous heart.

  1. Remember Strangers Are Guests

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares”  - Hebrews 13:2

Visitors are not intruders—they are honored guests. Let’s be known as a church that welcomes others as Christ has welcomed us.

  1. Give a Good Offering to God

“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce” - Proverbs 3:9

Our giving is an act of worship. Whether large or small, let it come from a heart that treasures God above all else.

  1. Never Rush for the Door

“They received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people” - Acts 2:46-47

Lingering after the service is not wasted time. Conversations, prayers, and shared encouragement are part of how the church grows in love.

  1. Never Stay Away Because the Church Isn’t Perfect

“Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other, as the Lord has forgiven you” - Colossians 3:13

The church is not a gathering of perfect people but a community of forgiven sinners. Let’s be quick to forgive and committed to unity.

  1. Come Expecting to Be Changed

“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth. It shall not return to me empty”
Isaiah 55:11 - God promises to work through His Word. Come with expectation that He will speak, convict, comfort, and transform.

  1. Come Ready to Encourage Others

“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” - Hebrews 10:24

Church is not a spectator event. Each of us plays a part in building up the body. Come ready to listen, pray, and encourage someone else.

Let us come to church each week with joy, reverence, and love. Let us come not only to receive but also to give. And let us come because Jesus Himself has welcomed us into the fellowship of His people.
