A Budget That Reflects Our Calling

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."
— Colossians 3:23-24

A church budget is far more than a financial tool—it’s a theological statement. It declares what we value, what we believe, and what we hope to accomplish for God’s kingdom. This year, we’re introducing a new budget format designed to reflect the spiritual purpose of our church’s resources. The new layout moves beyond simple categories to tell a story of how every dollar is part of our mission to glorify God, grow disciples, and share the gospel.

Here’s a guide to the sections of the budget document you received this past Lord’s Day and their purpose:

  1. Spiritual Vision for the Budget

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21
The opening section sets the tone, showing that our budget is more than numbers on a page—it’s an act of stewardship and worship. This section explains how each line item contributes to our mission as a church and invites you to prayerfully consider how God is at work through these resources. It reminds us of our ultimate purpose: to serve Christ and make Him known.

  1. Breakdown of the 5Ms

“Let all things be done for building up.” — 1 Corinthians 14:26
This section divides the budget into the key purposes of the church, providing an overview of how our resources are allocated to Mission, Magnification, Membership, Maturity, and Ministry. By linking each category to our spiritual calling as a church, this section helps us see how every dollar supports the work God has called us to.

  1. Detailed Line Items

“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.” — Luke 16:10
For those who want to dig deeper, this section lists the specific line items under each M. It includes the exact allocations for ministries, missionary support, staff, facilities, and other areas. Each item is paired with a brief explanation.

  1. Notes and Clarifications

“But all things should be done decently and in order.” — 1 Corinthians 14:40
This section anticipates questions and provides answers upfront. Whether it’s explaining specific terms, clarifying why certain projects are prioritized, or addressing areas of transition, this section is designed to bring clarity and hopefully answer some questions right off the bat. It reflects a desire to be transparent and proactive in communicating with the congregation.

  1. Vision for the Year Ahead

Scripture: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” — Proverbs 16:3
The final section looks forward, casting vision for how these resources will help us pursue our mission in the coming year. It invites you to pray for the work ahead, participate in the ministry, and join us in trusting God for what He will accomplish.

Why This Document Matters:
This format is designed to help us connect the practicalities of a budget with the eternal purposes of God’s kingdom. It’s an invitation to view our church’s resources through a spiritual lens and to see how your giving plays a vital role in advancing God’s mission. As you engage with the document, consider it not just as information but as an opportunity for worship and partnership in the gospel. If you haven’t received one yet, check your mailbox at church or the back table by the library.

The Heart of the Matter:
Ultimately, every dollar, every plan, and every line item exists to exalt the surpassing worth of Christ. Our Savior, who left the riches of heaven to take on human frailty, gave His all so that we might be redeemed. His is a treasure that cannot be measured, a love that cannot be exhausted, and a kingdom that will not fade. As you review this budget, let it stir your heart with gratitude for the privilege of stewarding resources in service to such a worthy King. May Christ be magnified in all we do.
