The Light That Surprises
December 4, 2025The Light That Surprises
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”, John 8:12
The season of Advent begins not with glitter, but with groaning. It invites us to wait. To ache. To remember that light did not come into a world already full of warmth, but into a world cold and dark and rebellious.
We forget too quickly that the greatest surprise of the gospel is not that God judges sin, but that He chooses to dwell with sinners. He moves toward us, not in anger, but in mercy.
From the beginning, this has always been His way. Even as Adam and Eve trembled beneath the trees of Eden, hiding from His presence, the Lord came walking. He clothed their shame. He promised a Deliverer. And in that promise was planted the first flicker of light.
Centuries later, when the night was at its darkest, the light came in full. Not as a blazing warrior or thundering king, but as a child. Quiet. Poor. Vulnerable. As Gregory of Nyssa said, “He who gives riches becomes poor; for He assumes the poverty of my flesh, that I may assume the richness of His Godhead.”
This is the shape of redemption: God descends to draw us near.
And still, He surprises. While the world prizes status, power, and prestige, the gospel whispers in unexpected corners. The Light of the World dines with sinners. He touches lepers. He weeps at tombs. He forgives the worst and welcomes the forgotten.
Advent teaches us to marvel again.
Too often, even as Christians, we grow used to grace. The manger becomes decoration. The incarnation becomes a doctrine we recite but do not ponder. But Christ did not come to fill a slot in a creed. He came to rescue the perishing, to draw near to the defiled, and to bring us, not just forgiveness, but fellowship with God.
As Spurgeon once said, “Jesus is not merely the light of heaven; He is the light of earth too. Not merely the joy of the glorified, but the joy of you who are tempted and tried.”
So look up. The shadows still linger, but the Light has come. And those who walk in Him need never be afraid again.
