Annual Report 2017

Annual Report 2017

At our last home in Santiago, Chile we had a beautiful cocktail climbing rose bush in our front yard. When we first arrived, however, it was in need of a lot of TLC. Over the first few months I tilled the ground, weeded, pruned, fertilized and tied the shrub to a trellis so it could grow upwards and flourish. Soon the rose bush began to show signs of new vigor. At first it flowered sporadically, but with time it grew to a height of three meters and started giving off hundreds of the most stunning petite flowers in an unending stream of new life. A little love, diligence, and a trellis to give guidance for growth made all the difference in the world.

In many respects, pastoring at Pineland this year has been like tending our climbing rose bush in Chile, as it’s been a time of getting to know the congregation; who you are and what you need in terms of pastoral care and vision. As 2017 closes, I realize that I have only been here nine months, but I’m excited to seek God’s direction for us as a family at PBC. Even with such a short tenure, I am thankful for several things. First, I’m thankful for the patience and care of the congregation, as my family has needed most of the year to move and settle into Burlington. Second, I’m thankful for the godly leadership that the Lord has established at PBC, from the ministry leaders, to the Elders Team, to Pastor Nate and Pastor Don. It’s a joy to serve and it’s exciting to see God’s providential hand on my family and the church.

The coming year promises to be one of much work, tending the soil, examining the trellis or ministries of the church, and encouraging growth. Revitalization is ultimately a work of the Holy Spirit, but there is much we can do to prepare our hearts and I know that you are with me in this holy duty. The culture and time in which we live provide unique challenges that can be met only with God’s power. The work ahead of us can seem daunting, but my trust and hope is in the Lord; His mercies are new every morning. (Lam. 3:19-22) He has a wonderful future ahead for us. May God bless us as we serve together for His glory and His Kingdom.
